Getting Started
Before we learn how to card count, I’m going to lay out the basic rules of Blackjack, discuss player strategies vs. various dealer up-card scenarios. Before we get started, however, I want to point out that this isn’t about playing one hand or just getting lucky with your bets; it’s about having a solid understanding of the odds and making sound decisions.
The Rules
Blackjack is a game of chance with the goal being to get as close to 21 without going over. The person who has the closest hand without going over wins the round. There are many variations in how you can play Blackjack, but there are always these basic rules:
- You must take cards until you stand or hit, and then draw more cards if needed.
- If your card total is more than 17, you may stay on that number; otherwise, it’s advisable to hit (take another card).
Your best bet? Understand all of the rules before playing so that you don’t lose too much money!
Here are some of the basic rules:
If dealer has an ace showing when they receive a 2nd card , it doesn’t count as Blackjack BUT they must use that same card for both hits . So if a ten is drawn second off of the deck, it’s still got to be used along with whatever would’ve been drawn on their third turn in order to qualify for 21.
Player must draw to 21 only . If you go over, it is an automatic loss for the player regardless of whether or not Dealer goes over 21.
Dealer ALWAYS stands on 16 . They do NOT hit this point; they will let you take another card unless it’s a two-card total of 17 (Ace+6). In that case, they’ll hit and immediately double their bet. This is what we call Insurance in blackjack, which I will discuss later. Otherwise, every other dealer total from 2-17 results in the dealer standing on “16”.
Any time either the Dealer or Player goes over 21 , The hand is considered a BUST and the losing party pays out at 1:1.
Doubling Down And Splitting Your Hand
For those of you who are new to blackjack, it’s a great idea to familiarize yourself with the following rules:
Doubling Down: If you have a weak hand and think the dealer has an equally weak card, then you can double down. This means that your bet is doubled which will give you one more play to work with – if it busts then the game is over but if not, all bets are returned
Splitting Pairs: You may also split pairs of cards of equal value into two hands and bet separately on each. When splitting aces or eights in this way, players must draw only one additional card after their first initial deal – so they get three cards total when splitting these types instead of four (but don’t forget about doubling-down!).
If either Player or Dealer goes over 21 , that party loses automatically. This is known as BUSTING , and occurs when either party has more than a 21 in total.
